2011 is definitely a year to remember for European Golf. Three of the four major winners are European tour members. Charl Schwartzel won the Masters, Rory Mcilroy won the US Open and Darren Clarke captured the Claret Jug. The top 4 Ranked golfers in the World are all European also; Luke Donald, Rory Mcilroy, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer.

European Golf is certainly the strongest it has ever been seeing as Europe currently hold the Ryder Cup and World Number one and Europe’s leading money winner Luke Donald, also came top of the US Tour Money List. This shows how Europe has dominated the World of Golf for the past 12 months and arguably longer. Go back to 2010 and the European Tour again had 3 major winners in the shape of Graeme Mcdowell, Louis Oosthuizen and Martin Kaymer meaning the European Tour captured 6 consecutive majors.

If this run of form continues into 2012, Europe are certain to be the odds on favourites when the Ryder Cup visits Chicago next September. Also the new generation of European golfers are destined to carry on the great form in the Majors. The likes of Mcilroy, Kaymer, Manassero and Schwartzel will lead the charge as well as the more experienced Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Darren Clarke and Padraig Harrington. The future looks bright for Europe.

However the Americans won’t be written off. The new era of Dustin Johnson, Nick Watney, Rickie Fowler are leading the US charge and the return to form of Tiger is bound to frighten his rivals.

Woods made two crucial putts on the last two holes with his Nike Method 001 putter to win

Nike athlete Tiger Woods is back in the winners’ circle and his win at the Chevron World Challenge came in a stunning dramatic “Tiger-like” fashion.

With two holes left to play in the final round, Woods needed a magical birdie putt on the 17th to tie and another one on the 18th to win. He accomplished both by making the crucial 15-foot birdie putt on 17 and a 10-footer to seal his victory on 18 with his Nike Method 001 putter. Arguably, one of the greatest golfers to ever play the game, Tiger Woods dominated tournaments world-wide for over a decade. But 2 years ago his world and dominance of Golf came to a halt when the news of his marital affairs came out. The news shocked the golfing world as Woods had always appeared to live a squeaky clean, private family life. How wrong those assumptions were. Not only has Tiger had to adapt to changes in his personal life, he has also had a lot of injuries to contend with. He has missed big chunks of the past 2 seasons and is slowly changing his swing. All these factors have seen Woods’ 10 year spell as World Number 1 end and he is now 50th in the Official World Golf Rankings.

This has led to everybody writing Wood’s off and saying he will never return to the dominant force he once was. Recently though there have been signs to suggest Tiger is out to prove his critics wrong. His last PGA Tour outing saw a top-20 finish which was an improvement. The Last 2 weeks have been the big turning point. He has dug deep to find his game and had some encouraging results Down Under. Last week at the Australian Open, 2 years since his last victory in the same event and also since his marital troubles hit the news, Woods was back in top form. He led after 36 holes and only a stone-cold putter on the Saturday prevented him claiming the title. He finished 3rd two shots back.

He then moved onto to the Presidents Cup, a Ryder Cup style event between USA and an International team. This was also staged in Australia. USA Captain Fred Couples was attacked in the press choosing the out of form Wood’s as one of his Wildcard picks. Tiger answered those critics in his usually fashion. He struggled the first two days but ended up claiming the winning point to ensure the USA retained the Presidents Cup. Although these last 2 years have been unusual for the Tiger we know, these last couple of events show he is slowly coming back to form. 2012 could be the year Tiger returns to his best. And that will surely intimidate his rivals.

Winter golf is now firmly set in for the next few months in Britain but the World’s best have gathered in Shanghai for the final World Golf Championship of the year, the WGC HSBC Champions. Nike staff player Francesco Molinari is the defending champion having won the biggest event of his career 12months ago.

Going into the weekend 6 of the top 11 on the Leader board are British. Paul Casey leads the British charge in 5th place currently 3 behind the leaders. US Open Champ Rory McIlroy is aiming to win back to back tournaments and is nicely placed inside the top 20. All this makes for an exciting finish to the Final WGC Event of the Season with a strong field all in contention in China.

Last weekend saw two of Europe’s best players win on both tours to continue Europe’s domination of world golf. Luke Donald won on the PGA Tour at the Children’s Network Miracle Hospitals’ Classic at Disney Land to finish top of the PGA Tour money list. He is also Leading the Race to Dubai, Europe’s money list and would be the first player to win both money lists on both sides of the Atlantic. Last Sunday his dream seemed to be slipping away when he reaching the 10th tee but an amazing run of 6th consecutive birdies left him with a 2 shot winning margin and the chance to complete an astonishing money list double.

Whilst Donald was continuing on his remarkable season, over in Spain Sergio Garcia was recapturing the form that saw him become one of the top players in the world only a few years ago. After a couple of poor seasons, Garcia seems to be re-motivated and back in love with the game of Golf. He hosted last week’s Castello Masters at his home club and romped to an 11 shot victory. It was his first win for almost 3 years and will hopefully see the Spaniard return to his best especially with the Ryder Cup 2012 less than 12 Months away. If the Europeans continue their fine individual form then they will undoubtedly go into next years matches at the firm favourites.

Rising golf superstar Tom Lewis added to his already impressive CV over the weekend when he captured the Portugal Masters in the Algarve.

A month after helping GB+I capture the Walker Cup, Lewis won his 1st Professional event in only his third attempt. This betters the efforts of Tiger Woods who won in his 5th tour start and Rory McIlroy who claimed his first tour win in his 38th event. If these stats are anything to go by then Lewis is in for a special future.

Lewis raced into the limelight back in July at Royal St Georges during the British Open. After shooting the lowest ever first round by an Amateur and impressing Golf Hall of Famer Tom Watson, with whom he played the opening two rounds alongside. After capturing the Silver Medal, Lewis turned his attentions to the Walker Cup before turning professional the week after GB+I had won at Royal Aberdeen. He was expecting to go down the gruelling route of Tour School but after last Weekend in Portugal, in which he finished with a 7 under-par 65, playing the last 7 holes in 5 under, he is now exempt on tour for 2 years and the Ping Staff player has a bright future ahead of him, especially if last weekend in Portugal is anything to go by. Expect to see a lot more of Tom Lewis in the future.

Northern Ireland continued its marvellous winning streak in the world of golf when Michael Hoey won the 2011 Dunhill Links Championship. On a wet and grim day at St. Andrews, Hoey finished 2 shots clear of second place Rory Mcilroy and four ahead of Graeme Mcdowell who finished in 3rd.

This was another week where Northern Ireland topped golf’s leader board which has become a familiar sight since Mcdowell captured the US Open back in 2010. Since then Mcilroy led the way at this year’s Masters for 63 holes before falling away on the back 9 on Sunday. He then blew the US Open field away in June.

Darren Clarke then captured the Open Championship at Royal St George’s in July to continue Northern Ireland’s remarkable run. Hoey’s victory at the Dunhill Links was his second of the 2011 season and a memorable one considering the wet and damp autumn weather they contended with on Sunday.

Nike Staff player Simon Dyson won for the second time in 2months when he claimed the KLM Open. The win was his 3rd in the last 6 years in the event and it re-kindled his love affair with the Netherlands. In cold and wet conditions Dyson finished the week 12 under, one ahead of fellow countryman David Lynn and two ahead of Rory Mcilroy.

Dyson has been in great form since his Irish Open win in late July and his recent form has earned him a place in the Top 30 in the World Rankings, a career high. Dyson is one of three Nike players in the World top 30.
