As Christmas gets increasingly closer Europe’s best golfers meet in Dubai for the climax of the 2011 golf season, it has the making of a Hollywood style finish and will have the golfing world on the edge of their seats. McIlroy is attempting to win for the second week running after his 2 shot victory at the Hong Kong Open. He is currently second on the Race to Dubai and needs to win the season ending event and hope the ever consistent Luke Donald doesn’t manage a top 9 display to claim the Race to Dubai title and be crowned Europe’s number 1 golfer. This may seem a tall ask seeing as Luke Donald seems to have only finished outside the top 10 in a handful of events this year. Also Luke Donald is aiming to become the first player in history to finish top of the money lists on the PGA and European tour having won the PGA season finale to claim number one spot across the pond.

As well as the world’s top 2 golfers going head-to-head to be crowned Europe’s number one, the likes of; Lee Westwood, Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, 2010 PGA Champion Martin Kaymer, 2010 US Open Champion Graeme McDowell and Spain’s Sergio Garcia and long-hitting Alvaro Quiros are part of the star-studded field.

Winter golf is now firmly set in for the next few months in Britain but the World’s best have gathered in Shanghai for the final World Golf Championship of the year, the WGC HSBC Champions. Northern Ireland continued its marvellous winning streak in the world of golf when Michael Hoey won the 2011 Dunhill Links Championship. On a wet and grim day at St. Andrews, Hoey finished 2 shots clear of second place Rory Mcilroy and four ahead of Graeme Mcdowell who finished in 3rd.

This was another week where Northern Ireland topped golf’s leader board which has become a familiar sight since Mcdowell captured the US Open back in 2010. Since then Mcilroy led the way at this year’s Masters for 63 holes before falling away on the back 9 on Sunday. He then blew the US Open field away in June.

Darren Clarke then captured the Open Championship at Royal St George’s in July to continue Northern Ireland’s remarkable run. Hoey’s victory at the Dunhill Links was his second of the 2011 season and a memorable one considering the wet and damp autumn weather they contended with on Sunday.

Johnnie Walker Championship, Gleneagles, Scotland

After a fog delayed the start of the 10th Johnnie Walker championship, a dramatic five man, five-hole play off rounded off this exciting tournament - the first in the European Tour since the BMW International Open in 1992.

Looking smart in Lyle & Scott clothing, Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal entered the play off on the 11-under-par mark of 277. He was joined by South African George Coetzee – who sported a range of titleist caps and footjoy shirts during the tournament, Austrian Bernd Wiesberger, Englishman Mark Foster and leading Dane, Thomas Bjorn.

But Larrazabal took an early bath and out of the playoff after carding a six, after his chip for birdie from over the green went nearly five feet past the hole. This followed Wiesberger who was first to leave, also running up a six on the first extra hole after driving into a bush and taking a penalty drop.

The crowd was then entertained by Bjorn, Coetzee and Foster with three like for like birdies. It was then Fosters turn to exit on the fourth extra hole after leaving his 20 foot putt from the rough short, leaving Bjorn and Coetzee to battle it out over the superb Gleneagles golf course.

In the end it was 40 year old Thomas Bjorn who triumphed after an exquisite 7 Iron to within three feet setup yet another birdie when Coetzee could only manage a par. Bjorn, who not only picks up the £233,330 winners cheque, but now also moves into 8th position in the Race To Dubai.

A delighted Bjorn said, “The way I played the last three playoff holes, I can't be more proud of what I did. Everything was pretty spot on and those wedges I hit in on the playoff holes three and four were special, but that 7 iron on the fifth playoff hole was probably one of the best golf shots I've ever hit.”

Second place Coetzee said of his performance, “I think I did well. I stayed with it. I'm quite happy with the way I handled it. I'll take second place, it's an improvement on my best finish. Next time I'll go one better. Hopefully.”

Lyle & Scott and Ping tour player Matt Nixon set off at blistering pace at the Iberdrola Open at Pula Golf Club in Mallorca. Nixon led from the front with a superb opening round of 65 and then followed it up with a steady 70 which included a double at the last on Friday to tie for 2nd at the halfway stage. Nixon opened his 3rd round with another double and from then on failed to find the form of his earlier rounds finishing with rounds of 76 and 77 respectively for a disappointing total of +8 T38.

Designer Golf Wear recommends Matt Nixon is one to watch this season. The Ashton-Under-Lyne golfer has made a steady start to his rookie year on the European tour after earning his card at Q-school and as he finds his feet he is sure to feature very soon at the top of a leader board.

For Lyle & Scott ambassador Chris Wood it was a case of "so close, so far away" after the final round of the Iberdrola Open at Pula GC in Mallorca. The Lyle & Scott tour player was edged out of what would have been his maiden tour victory by Northern Irishman Darren Clarke. Clarke carded a final round 69 which clinched him his 13th tour title but both golfers encountered their share of problems on the back 9. Clarke’s challenge looked to be dampening after knocking it into the water at the 11th hole and walking off with a double-bogey but Wood 3-putted the 12th & 13th holes before driving it out of town at the 15th which contributed to a back 9 of 40 despite nearly ace-ing the last. But it was Clark who birdied and scrambled his way home to claim the e167,000 winners cheque. Not a bad return to work for Clarke after a week holidaying in the Bahamas.

Clarke may be the best golfer this week but Chris Wood in his Lyle & Scott Green Eagle definitely get the Designer Golf Wear trend setter award.
