As Christmas gets increasingly closer Europe’s best golfers meet in Dubai for the climax of the 2011 golf season, it has the making of a Hollywood style finish and will have the golfing world on the edge of their seats. The World’s best 4 golf players; Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer are in the field as well as the other 56 golf players in the top 60 on the Race to Dubai rankings. Talk about a strong field!

McIlroy is attempting to win for the second week running after his 2 shot victory at the Hong Kong Open. He is currently second on the Race to Dubai and needs to win the season ending event and hope the ever consistent Luke Donald doesn’t manage a top 9 display to claim the Race to Dubai title and be crowned Europe’s number 1 golfer. This may seem a tall ask seeing as Luke Donald seems to have only finished outside the top 10 in a handful of events this year. Also Luke Donald is aiming to become the first player in history to finish top of the money lists on the PGA and European tour having won the PGA season finale to claim number one spot across the pond.

As well as the world’s top 2 golfers going head-to-head to be crowned Europe’s number one, the likes of; Lee Westwood, Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, 2010 PGA Champion Martin Kaymer, 2010 US Open Champion Graeme McDowell and Spain’s Sergio Garcia and long-hitting Alvaro Quiros are part of the star-studded field.

Northern Ireland continued its marvellous winning streak in the world of golf when Michael Hoey won the 2011 Dunhill Links Championship. On a wet and grim day at St. Andrews, Hoey finished 2 shots clear of second place Rory Mcilroy and four ahead of Graeme Mcdowell who finished in 3rd.

This was another week where Northern Ireland topped golf’s leader board which has become a familiar sight since Mcdowell captured the US Open back in 2010. Since then Mcilroy led the way at this year’s Masters for 63 holes before falling away on the back 9 on Sunday. He then blew the US Open field away in June.

Darren Clarke then captured the Open Championship at Royal St George’s in July to continue Northern Ireland’s remarkable run. Hoey’s victory at the Dunhill Links was his second of the 2011 season and a memorable one considering the wet and damp autumn weather they contended with on Sunday.

In 2010 he won the Waste Management Phoenix Open followed by an 8th place in the Masters Tournament and then went on to card his 2nd career tour victory at the World Golf Championships - Bridgestone Invitational.
